A place your customers can look, instead of calling to ask
A large share of the phone calls a trade business takes are people asking for information you already have: what did I order, what do I owe, where is it. A portal does not replace the relationship — it takes the lookups off it.
How it usually works today
- Customers email or call to ask what they ordered and what is outstanding.
- Statements get re-sent because the last one is buried.
- Dealers have no way to check their own account without going through you.
- The same three questions take up a real part of the week.
What replaces it
- Their orders, their invoices, their history, under their own login.
- Documents available to download rather than requested and re-sent.
- Dealers placing and tracking their own orders against their own pricing.
- The calls you get are the ones that need you.
Scoped so one customer can never see another
This is the part that has to be built rather than configured. Every query is built from the session on the server, never from anything the browser sends, so there is no customer identifier to substitute in a URL. We take this seriously because the failure is silent: a portal that leaks one account into another looks completely normal until it does not.
Dealer networks
A cabinet manufacturer with a national dealer network has a specific version of this — dealers ordering against SKUs and finishes, with their own pricing and their own order history, at a volume that makes phone ordering the bottleneck. The portal is the product in that case, not a convenience on the side.
